It features charred wooden handles created using the ancient Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique
Lagos to Brooklyn : RIA I to RIA II
The RIA chair was inspired by a conversation with my mother, Gloria, in our Lagos garden, where I observed her searching for outdoor chairs that matched her eclectic style. Drawing from the vibrant Lagos culture, I designed the original RIA chair with a minimalist steel frame and locally sourced rattan weaving, handcrafted by skilled Nigerian artisans.
Less than a year later, after relocating to New York City, I revisited the design and created RIA II, influenced by the city’s industrial character and trendy residents. This reinterpretation features a brushed aluminium frame for a sleek, modern look, reinforced leather weaving, and a limited edition black stained pine wood handle. Together, these chairs foster a dialogue between continents and cultures, showcasing the evolving definition of Contemporary African Design.
